A jewel of Saint-Emilion
For centuries, the ancient ‘Camp Fortet’(small fort) with its modest profile has overlooked the historictown of Saint-Émilion, peacefully surveying it in times of prosperity, protecting it in times of war. The 20-hectare vineyard forms a single plot, planted upon the highest slopes of Western Saint-Émilion. Constructed from thevery rock upon which it stands, the chateau and its surrounding wall (hence‘clos’) are intimate and unassuming. Ever since the beginning of theclassification in 1956, Clos Fourtet has been a member of the elite‘Premiers Grands Crus Classés’ of Saint-Émilion.
A family perpetuating excellence
Philippe Cuvelier acquired Clos Fourtet in2001. He entrusts the running of the estate to his son Matthieu. Together theyinvest and oversee thoughtful and progressive change, constantly striving forexcellence. Passionate about the land, they choose to use organic andbiodynamic treatment methods in the vineyard. The estate is looked after withcare and love, for it is a jewel that will eventually be passed down to futuregenerations.
The expression of great terroir
The vineyard is situated upon the summit ofSaint-Émilion, where limestone soils offer superb drainage. This predominanceof limestone brings inimitable freshness to the wines, with minerality anddelicate tannins. The result is wines with a strong identity that is dear topassionate enthusiasts who talk of a ‘Clos Fourtet style’. We work gently, atone with the nature that surrounds us, to support and nurture our soils.
The wines of Clos Fourtet
The wines of Clos Fourtet, PremierGrand Cru Classé, embody the finest of Saint-Émilion. Smooth, intriguingand seductive, their pure natural aromas are delicately woven together in acharming display of the unparalleled potential of our terroir. Our wines markthe culmination of all of our efforts, unveiling themselves as timepasses - alive, developing and maturing.
🏅Vinous 93pts
The 2008 Clos Fourtet has a tightly wound bouquet with raspberry, cranberry and light tertiary aromas, a touch of bell pepper in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This Clos Fourtet boasts impressive body, almost sinewy in style, a backward 2008 Saint Émilion from Mathieu Cuvelier although I was smitten by its persistent spicy aftertaste. It clearly deserves a couple more years in bottle. One to watch carefully.
🏅Wine Advocate 92pts
A strong effort, the 2008 was made from tiny yields of 28.5 hectoliters per hectare, and attained 14% natural alcohol. It reveals sweet licorice, black currant and blackberry fruit notes intermixed with truffle and asphalt characteristics in its pure, rich, opulent, full-bodied personality. One of the finest St.-Emilions of the vintage, it is far more accessible than the 2010 and should continue to drink well for 15-20 years.
🏅Wine Enthusiast 92pts
Big, ripe and rich, with smoky bacon flavors as well as sweet tannins. The wine feels generous, the tannins cushioned.
🏅Wine Spectator 90pts
Juicy, with a tasty mix of dark plum, crushed fig and blackberry fruit, followed by licorice, black tea and maduro tobacco. The long finish lets it all hang together nicely.
