Winery

Clos Marsalette was created in 2002 by Francis Boutemy. Francis Boutemy was already experienced in Bordeaux as he owned the neighboring estate of Chateau Haut Lagrange. Actually, it is fair to say that Francis Boutemy came from a wine family, as his grandfather, Jacques Guillemaud, was both a negociant and the owner of Chateau Larrivet HautBrion, also located in Pessac Leognan.

Today, Clos Marsalette is also owned in part byStephan von Neipperg and Didier Miqueu. Stephan von Neipperg iswell-known for all his Bordeaux properties in St. Emilion. Thisincludes Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte.

Winemaking

This vineyard sits magnificently on gravelly risesdeposited aeons ago by the Garonne. Offering a great diversity the subsoil iscomposed of marine sediment from the Miocene and Pliocene epochs (5 to 15million years ago) in the form of shelly sand with a bit of clay, fawn-colouredsand, and multi-coloured clay.

Clos Marsalette’s vineyard which covers an areaof 12,30 hectares (for the red wine) plus 1,30 hectares (for the white wine) isalso looked after expertly in order to produce a wine reflecting the typicityof this Terroir.

Rating/Tasting Note

Vinous 91 pts

The 2014 Clos Marsalette offers up an intriguing combination of super-ripe red stone fruit and expressive floranotes. Today, the 2014 is especially racy and a bit more overtly ripe than it was from barrel. Sweet herbs, tobacco,rose petal, mint and anise add lift to the creamy, inviting finish. Tasted two times.

Quite smoky, but this is a rich wine that carries the oak rather well, and there’s a very solid tannic base to this that doesn’t dominate the taste. Delicious fruit under it all.
