Cointreau History
Born during the Industrial Revolution, Cointreau's unique recipe for French orange liqueur has won more than 300 international awards, and there are many stories behind Cointreau's rich history. In 1849, Adolphe Cointreau, an Angers confectioner at the time, decided to diversify his family's business into the liqueur industry. With his proven fruit expertise, he soon became an award-winning producer, and was joined by Edouard Cointreau, who is the soul behind Cointreau Orange Liqueur.
The recipe for Cointreau Orange Liqueur first appeared in the Cointreau brothers' recipe book in 1857 and won its first prize at the Laval Exhibition in France. After several years of tireless research and experimentation, Edouard Cointreau succeeded in creating and naming his ideal: a perfectly balanced liqueur with a flavor that was three times stronger than any other liqueur of the time, but less sweet. Its flavor was three times stronger than other liqueurs of the time, but less sweet. The key was the use of dried and fresh sweet oranges and bitter orange peel, perfectly blended. Edouard Cointreau then trademarked the Cointreau brand and its distinctive shape.
It was not until 1989 that Cointreau officially merged with the Cognac producer Remy Martin to create the powerful international group Cointreau Remy Martin.
