Winery

Chateau de Sales, located in the Pomerol appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France, is the largest winery in Pomerol.

The winery dates back to 1249 or even earlier. It was renovated in the 15th and 16th centuries, but was destroyed in 1630 during Louis VIII's attack on the Savoy dynasty. In 1672, the Sales family, owners of the estate, built a chapel on the ruins. In the 19th century, architect Ruphy restored the grounds and added a new wine cellar, creating a breathtaking view. In 1982, the winery was designated a historical and cultural heritage site by the Ministry of Culture. Today, the winery remains in the Sales family's ownership.

Region

Chateau de Sales is located in the northwest of the Pomerol appellation. With 90 hectares of land, including 47.6 hectares under vine, it is the largest estate in the Pomerol appellation. The estate has remained largely unchanged since the 16th century, losing only 3 hectares during the French Revolution. The vineyard's planting ratio is 73% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc. The soil is composed of small gravels and hot sand containing iron oxides. The average planting density is 5,900 vines per hectare.
Certified as a High Environmental Value (HVE) by the French Ministry of Agriculture in 2020, the winery practices good viticultural techniques that integrate and promote biodiversity, avoids the use of chemical herbicides, and employs natural pheromones to combat pests.
Traditional farming methods are maintained in the vineyard: regular plowing, in accordance with the principles of protecting nature, and regular leaf thinning and removal of excess green grape bunches (also known as "de-greening") to allow the remaining grapes to receive more sunlight and nutrients, ensuring the production of exquisite wines. Each plot is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness.
Winemaking

The wine is typically fermented in temperature-controlled cement vats and then matures for 12-18 months. To preserve the wine's fruitiness, freshness, and the vineyard's terroir, and to avoid excessive oak flavor, the wine is typically aged for only six months in oak barrels, which are 5% new, before continuing to mature in the bottle. In addition to the grand vin, Château de Sales also produces a second wine, Château Chateaulouette, with an annual production of 1,000 cases of the grand vin and 5,000 cases of the second vin.

Rating

James Suckling 94
A full and juicy red with blackberry, black olive, dark chocolate, and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Creamy, round and deliciously textured. Not a big and powerful wine but very attractive now and for the future. Seductive in so many way. Merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon.
