歷史/ 背景

James Suckling, one of today's leading authorities on Vintage Port was equally impressed by another legendary wine - the Dow's 1896 - “The ancient {1896} Ports till had an amazing ruby colour with a garnet edge, and it smelled of raisins, black pepper and berries. It was full-bodied, with masses of fruit intertwined with layers of velvety tannins. It was superb.” In 1998, when this wine was 102 years old, he awarded this Port an exceptional 98 points.

Garnet color with a yellow edge. This verysweet and very old tawny Port shows fabulous density and richness, not tomention intense sweetness and depth. A little tannic yet remains polished andcaressing. Long and flavorful finish of dried fruits, citrus, caramel andbutterscotch as well as salted nuts. Some Portuguese flan. Drink now.

Hazelnut and walnut husk notes give this adry edge to start, while more flattering toffee, sesame and cinnamon flavorsemerge on the back end. Long echoes of powdered ginger and juniper linger. Onthe drier side, this leaves a mouthwatering feel.

The NV 40 Year Old Very Old Tawny Porto isa field blend coming in with 127 grams per liter of residual sugar. It wasbottled in 2018 with a bar-top cork. While this continues to some extent the"dry, stern and powerful" feel of its siblings, this also has the mostrichness, the sweetest edge and the most ability to cut that stern aspect. Thefinish is long and delicious, laced with caramel and milk chocolate. Two dayslater, that was a lot clearer. It seems relatively young for a 40 until younote the concentration. It's easily the most concentrated of the group. It wasalso my personal favorite of the group, although I did tend to keep takinganother taste of the vivacious 30. It may depend on what style you like—this 40is about richness and concentration, while the 30 is brighter and livelier. Ingoing from 30 to 40, of course, it's not always a night-and-day difference interms of maturity. They are both very mature and satisfy that requirement well.They are both well done overall, and both to me seem much more interesting thantheir younger siblings.

 A dark, concentrated wine, very impressive.But with all this concentration, there is also sweet fruit, flavors of apricotsthat have been bottled in spirits. This is a lovely wine, with just a hint ofmature, medicinal character.
