Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Bisseuil Premier Cru Champagne《ZTF295》
Egly-Ouriet is hailed as one of the pioneers of grower Champagne, representing a small, independent producer that advocates for estate-grown and estate-bottled wines. Its Champagnes are highly esteemed by collectors and connoisseurs for their distinctive character, depth, exceptional aging potential, and emphasis on expressing the terroir of individual vineyard plots. The winery has received the highest accolades from wine legend Robert Parker and major French professional publications. Champagne expert Tyson Stelzer also rated it as a perfect-scoring estate, placing it among renowned houses such as Krug, Salon, and Bollinger—making it the only grower Champagne producer to receive such an honor.
Founded in 1930, the estate is now in its fourth generation of family leadership. In 1981, Francis Egly completed his studies and military service before joining his father Michel full-time at the domaine. The 1990 vintage—Francis’s first experience of fully ripened grapes—proved deeply inspiring to him. Around the same time, his encounter with influential French wine critic Michel Bettane played a pivotal role in shaping Egly-Ouriet’s future. Encouraged by Bettane, the estate began bottling still white and red wines and introduced oak barrel fermentation for its white wines. It also started experimenting with winemaking techniques more commonly associated with Burgundy, aiming to better express the unique flavors and characteristics of Champagne terroir.
Domaine d'Aigle-Ori spans 12 hectares of vineyards, primarily situated within the renowned Montagne de Reims appellation of Champagne. This includes the premier cru villages of Ambonnay and Bouzy on the southern slopes, and Verzenay on the northern slopes. The region's predominantly chalky soils provide exceptional drainage, imparting distinctive mineral characteristics to the wines. The estate's vines average 40 years of age and are cultivated using low-intervention methods. The estate is progressively transitioning to organic farming practices to enhance the natural expression of the terroir.
Francis Egly is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail in both viticulture and winemaking. He abandoned the chemical fertilizers used in the past, adopting Burgundy vineyard cultivation methods that utilize organic fertilizers and enforce stricter management of grape growth and sufficient ripeness. Grapes are hand-harvested at peak ripeness and whole-cluster pressed in refrigerated, gentle presses to prevent oxidation. Juice ferments with indigenous yeasts, partly in French oak barrels and partly in vats. Malolactic fermentation is adjusted according to the vintage's requirements. The wine undergoes extended lees aging, lasting a minimum of three to four years, enhancing complexity and smoothness—distinguishing it from thinner commercial champagnes. Before bottling, only 2–4 g/L of dosage is added to adjust flavor, preserving the estate's ideal of pure, balanced style. In 1996, Francis boldly pioneered the use of new oak barrels for primary fermentation. With guidance from his friend Dominique Laurent, owner of a premier Burgundy estate, approximately 15% new barrels were employed. The wine aged in these barrels for 8-10 months before being bottled unfiltered and undecanted, with a minimum of 36 months on the lees.
This approach reveals the most natural expression of Pinot Noir grown in the village of Ambonnay: rich minerality, elegant acidity, concentrated fruit flavors, and a full-bodied structure. Francis Egly once stated: "Whether the cuvée succeeds or fails, I must understand why. My champagne is not an industrial product. My mission is to seize every rare opportunity to vividly capture Ambonnay's terroir, culture, and climate within each bottle." Through its commitment to quality, respect for terroir, and innovation in organic practices, Egly-Ouriet has cemented its position as a premier name in the world of Champagne.

A considerable step up from Les Prémices and Les Vignes de Vrigny in complexity and tension, Egly's 2019 vintage-based NV Les Vignes de Bisseuil includes reserve wines from 2018 and 2017 and was disgorged in October 2024 with one gram per liter dosage. Heavily based on Chardonnay with 15% Pinot Noir and 15% Pinot Meunier, all vinified in oak, it derives from a south-facing site on chalky soils in Bisseuil. Wafting from the glass with aromas of fresh citrus fruit, bread crust and crisp pear, it is medium- to full-bodied and concentrated yet racy and fresh, with notable cut and a chalky profile, concluding with a long, precise finish. Just like Egly's grand cru bottlings, this too will richly reward patience.
