The Médoc, characterised by the mild temperate maritime climate, offers ideal conditions of a seasonal cycle that is sufficiently marked to accompany the annual growth of the vine and mild enough to attenuate climatic excesses. The vines at Château Phélan Ségur are close to the estuary: this situation protects them from hard winters and summers that are sometimes very hot.

The complexity of the terroir of Saint-Estèphe, of which Château Phélan Ségur is a perfect illustration. It is made up of a thick layer of gravel deposited by the river, a few hundred thousand years ago. The pebbles and above all the gravels coated with clay sands (clay gravels) shape the rolling landscape of a large part of Saint-Estèphe.

Created in 1986, Frank Phélan, the second wine of the Château, bears the name of the son of Bernard Phélan, founder of the estate. Frank Phélan comes from 15 hectares of old vines and a selection of vines of less than ten years. It respects the classic values of the Château by expressing another facet of its terroir.

Frank Phélan associates indulgent fruit, intense and compelling, with an elegant structure of silky tannins. It undergoes 14 months’ ageing. Its roundness and suppleness allow it to be enjoyed from a young age.

A linear yet juicy red with compressed, ripe tannins with lots of spices and ripe berries, as well as hazelnuts. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Excellent second wine from Phélan Segur. Drink in 2022.

The second wine of Phélan Ségur in Saint-Estèphe, the 2018 Frank Phélan has a terrific nose of ripe dark currants, black cherries, leafy herbs, and spring flowers. This plump, medium-bodied, fruit-forward and undeniably delicious 2018 is already hard to resist yet is going to easily keep for a good decade. It's a hidden gem of a Saint-Estèphe.
