John Grant was a well-known cattle breeder who bought the Glenfarclas distillery and Recherlich farm in 1865. The land was an ideal halfway staging post between his existing farm in Glenlivet, and the cattle market in nearby Elgin.
The distillery was purchased for £511.19d. Since farming was John's priority, he let the distillery to John Smith, who later established Cragganmore distillery. However, during this time, the cattle drovers and workmen certainly enjoyed the sustenance of a dram of Glenfarclas!
In 1830 John Grant had a son, George; who was later to take over the farm and distillery in 1889. Sadly, George passed away not long. afterwards. Subsequently, the licence for the distillery was passed on to George's widow Elsie. She then appointed her two eldest children, John and George, to take care of the business.
Now in the equally safe hands of the fifth generation of the family, the Grants remain committed to the original vision; creating the finest quality Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky in the traditional Speyside way.
Since 1865 Glenfarclas has been owned and managed by just one family, the Grants of Glenfarclas. On the Sth of June 1865 John Grant acquired the tenancy for the Rechlerich Farm and as part of the transaction purchased the Glenfarclas Distillery for £511.19s.Od. To this day Glenfarclas is one of only a few distilleries in Scotland to remain family owned and managed. Now in the hands of the fifth generation of the family, the Grants remain committed to the vision of creating the best quality Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, in the traditional Speyside style.
The distinctive, some say unforgettable, taste of our Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the result of the family's experience over 150 years. Our insistence on using traditional distillation methods gives our spirit that time-honoured quality.
Glenfarclas, from the Gaelic 'Valley of the Green Grassland', nestles at the foot of Ben Rinnes. Far up on its heather covered slopes, fed by the melting snows of winter, crystal clear spring water bubbles up from the granite below.Distilled twice in our traditional direct fired stills.
John Grant personally travels to one particular family run Bodega in Spain to select only the finest European oak casks, previously used for the maturation of fine Oloroso sherry.
A rival distiller wrote to the Grant family in May, 1912: "of all the whiskies, malt is king, of all the kings, Glenfarcas reigns supreme", a compliment the family still hold dear and close to their hearts.
