Krug Grande Cuvee 173eme Edition With Box《ZTF305A_BOX》

Krug Champagne is known as the Rolls-Royce of champagne. Whether it's the basic Grande Cuvée or the top-tier Clos d'Ambonnay, it epitomizes quality and luxury. Founded in 1843 by a German named Johann-Joseph Krug, he later dropped the middle Johann to blend in with French tastes, changing his name to Joseph Krug. Initially, Joseph worked for the then-major house, Jacquesson, and soon became a partner.
But disagreements arose with Jacquesson. Customers began to lose confidence in the inconsistent quality of their champagnes. Joseph Krug believed he should create a more consistent and high-quality champagne to reward them. However, he was met with a cold response: "Don't waste time; vintage determines quality." So, Joseph Krug decided to strike out and create his own champagne, laying the foundation for his subsequent winemaking philosophy. Krug is now part of the LVMH group, just like Dom Perignon. However, unlike other brands within the group, Krug remains family-run and independently managed, with sixth-generation owner Olivier Krug currently at the helm.

Only 21 hectares of vineyards are owned by the house, accounting for 30% of production. The remaining vineyards, like those of other Champagne houses, are purchased from a select group of approximately 100 growers, some of whom have collaborated for generations. Therefore, in addition to the Krug team, the growers are also involved in the blending process, providing input and allowing them to gain a firsthand understanding of the high quality of their vineyards. Like Dom, Krug never discloses its actual production volume to avoid the misconception that high yields imply low quality. However, it should be noted that despite its significant production and numerous vineyards, it is able to monitor and process each one individually while maintaining quality, a level not typically achieved by other Champagne houses.

A key characteristic of Krug is its vast base wines, which provide exceptionally stable and high-quality blending options. The vineyards are divided into over 250 parcels, and grapes from each parcel are vinified separately to provide a specific style of base wine for the blend. These wines are then stored separately, maintaining a consistent inventory of over 200 base wines spanning over ten years, stored in separate containers. The non-vintage Grande Cuvée, a classic, non-vintage wine, uses approximately 45% reserve wine each year, ensuring Krug maintains a high level of consistency, style, and quality.
Another hallmark of Krug is its consistent use of 205L champagne barrels for the first fermentation. Krug employs approximately 4,000 of these barrels, each with an average age of 25 years. The oldest barrels have been used since 1964. This allows the wine to penetrate the barrel's pores and come into contact with oxygen, enhancing its complexity and structure, making it more stable and capable of aging without excessive barrel notes or tannins.

Extremely complex, showing dried apples, light caramel, brioche and flint with cedar, nuts and hints of gunmetal. Integrated, caressing bubbles. Medium-bodied with a laser-guided, compacted and extremely long palate that focuses the character and the flavors. So deep and polished. Tangy at the end.
