HISTORY

Ch. Le Coteau is a neighbor to the finer sites of Rauzan Ségla, Giscours, du Tertre, and Issan, along a storied stretch of fine Garonne gravel in Margaux. This small estate is a survivor, with the dedication to viticulture and traditional technique in cellar. A well-fruited, approachable red wine, dominant with Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine also has a softer, spiced quality, with cocoa and cedar on the palate, supporting dark fruit and subtle violets on the nose. A classic for steak in a peppercorn sauce, or burgers with adventurous toppings, this wine comes from vines averaging 30 years; it was matured 14 months in oak, one third new. The owner and vintner Eric Leglise is passionate about the extraordinary biodiversity found in his vineyard.


The vineyard

The 12 hectares of CHÂTEAU LE COTEAU are located in the town of Arsac.

Most of the parcels are adjacent to prestigious classified growths: CHÂTEAU RAUZAN-SÉGLA, CHÂTEAU GISCOURS, CHÂTEAU DU TERTRE, CHÂTEAU ISSAN ...


Terroir

It is an exceptional terroir, that of the greatest wines of Médoc. It is composed of Garonne gravel left by the former Garonne quaternary during the glaciation of Günz.

These graves are composed of pebbles, pebbles and gravels originating from the Massif Central and the Pyrenees.

These are very poor and very filtering warm soils that are ideal for growing grapes and for maturing grapes. This terroir would be nothing without the climatic influence of the nearby river that softens temperatures.

The deep purple/ruby-hued 2017 Chateau Le Coteau checks in as equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and spent 15 months in barrels, with 25% being new. This medium-bodied, nicely textured, balanced Margaux has impressive aromatics of black cherries, dried flowers, and cedary spice. It shows the elegance and mid-weight style of the vintage and has terrific balance and ripe tannins. Give it a year or three and enjoy over the following decade. This tiny estate is owned by Philippe Porcheron and is located between Le Tertre and Monbrison (in the Arsac region), with Michel Rolland adding consulting advice.

The 2017 Le Coteau is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed red and black currants, blackberries and raspberry preserves with hints of rosehip tea and cinnamon toast. Medium-bodied, soft and plush, with loads of juicy fruit, it finishes seductively fragrant.

Plenty of toasted spices and good fragrance with a rich, ripe plum and berry nose. This has a very fresh and juicy palate with plenty of red plums and dark, toasted spices. Long, elegant finish. Outstanding value. Drink or hold.
