his family took root in the Bordeaux area at the beginning of the XXth Century. In 1920, Nicolas’ grandfather Georges Thienpont purchased Chateau Troplong-Mondot in Saint-Emilion (sold in 1935) and then three years later Vieux Château Certan, a jewel of Pomerol.

Nicolas had not intended to become a winegrower. He spent his childhood at Puygueraud, having attended a Jesuit boarding school, he then pursued his higher education in law and philosophy where he developed a passion for Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. He taught philosophy in Reims for one year before joining a boilermaking company in Marseilles/Aix-en-Provence, where he was Social Affairs Manager for 5 years. The beckoning of the vines would divert him from this career trajectory.

In the 1980’s, he took over the helm of Château Puygueraud, a property that was acquired by his parents in 1946, located on the small Bordeaux appellation of Côtes-de-Francs. In less than a decade he received market recognition and participated in bringing the spotlight on this otherwise unknown appellation.

Self-made vigneron, his sensitive approach to viticulture, based on an intimate comprehension of the terroirs, is particularly appreciated. The proprietors of Grand Cru’s often solicit his knowledge and competence to provide a new impulse to their vineyards.

The vineyard, acquired by Nicolas Thienpont in 1988, produces a dry wine made like a great Bordeaux white, which has helped to boost the appellation’s revival. The predominance of Semillon and the winemaking techniques used (fermentation in 500L barrels, maturation on the lees for six months) give the wine intensity and liveliness.

The vineyard, purchased by Nicolas Thienpont in 1988, produces a dry white wine that has proven its ability to age and compete with the great white Bordeaux wines. The core of the blend is made up of old vines, over 70 years old. Year after year, the young Sémillons of Laclaverie assert themselves and naturally take their place. The predominance of Semillon as well as the vinification techniques (fermentation in barrels, maturing on lees) give the wine vivacity and roundness. At the end of August 2020, the harvest, although early, takes place in the most perfect serenity.

Vineyard: Traditional soil management: light ploughing and aeration of the soil with inter-row planting of cereals in the autumn. Numerous manual interventions: debudding, leaf-thinning and green harvest. Manual harvests.

An underrated white with depth and intensity of dried lemons, limes, peach pie and oyster shell. It’s full and flavorful. Long and phenolic finish.

“The 2020 Chateau Les Charmes-Godard Blanc is a richer, more concentrated, medium-bodiedwhite with terrific aromatics of ripe melons, honeyed white flowers, chalk, and a kiss of toasted nuts. This textured yet still vibrant and pure white is geared for the dinner table

In 2020, Les Charmes Godard offers terific vibrancy to plav off its beautifuly textured fruit, L emon confit, whiteflowers, mint and chamomile build effortlessly in the glass. From bottle the 2020 shows more energy than it did as abarrel sample. This is beautifully done. Les Charmes Godard is one of the most compeling dry whites in Bordeaux.

A little closed on the nose right now.  Such a gorgeous palate, though, with lovely weight, definition, texture and flavours - crunchy, crisp, balanced and harmonious.  A little bit oaky, but only a touch in the weight, a tiny bit of fat which is actually quite satisfying, feels well worked withpurpose to give this more ageing potential.  So, give this time, but the elements are really there forenjoyment.  Crisp lemon, apricot and peach, some salted wild honey and lime zest.  Interesting and characterful.  Wait a while.

🏅 Wine Advocate 90+ pts
Exhibiting aromas of crisp pear, waxy lemon rind and struck match, the 2020 Les Charmes-Godard Blanc is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a textural attack, tangy acids and a fleshy but tightly wound core. This Sémillon-based blend is still a little shy after its recent bottling, but its vinous, structured profile promises compelling things with a bit of age.
