Bought by the Thienpont family in 1988, and managed by Nicolas Thienpont, quality has been on the rise at this 6-hectare estate in Francs Côtes de Bordeaux ever since. The Thienpont family originated in Flanders and have been relative latecomers to the Bordeaux scene, but have made up for lost time by buying or controlling several excellent properties besides Les Charmes Godard, including Vieux Château Certan, Le Pin, Château Pavie Macquin, Château Larcis Ducasse and Château Bellevue. This experience has been brought to bear on Les Charmes-Godard and new massale selection plantings will increase production in the future.

Château Les Charmes Godard is noted for the unusually high percentage of Merlot, more traditional to the appellation. The result is a wine with lots of fruit and charm from its youth onwards. The parcels located in various parts of the Côtes de Francs appellation. Soils are partly clay and limestone with sub-soils of marl. The soil management is traditional; light ploughing and aeration of the soil with inter-row planting of cereals in the winter.

Hand-harvested with berry sorting, total destemming and light crushing. Fermentation was in controlled-temperature vats. Maceration was with frequent pumping-over lasts approximately three weeks. The juice was run off once the best extraction has been reached and the wine was aged in a combination of vats and oak barrels (of which a quarter is new) for 16 months. Regular racking was followed by one fining, meaning that the wine was bottled without filtration, resulting in intense colour and bouquet, the wine combines both suppleness and full-bodied structure.

This is very dense and lively with stones, limestone and cement. Full-bodied, yet vivid and lively. Beautiful finish. This is always an under-the-radar Bordeaux and needs your attention.

Bold tannins and ripe fruit are the hallmarks of this rich wine from the Nicolas Thienpont range. A solid structure backs up the ripe black-currant flavors. The wine will certainly age well, so wait until 2021.
