Founded in 1824, the Macallan winery is located on the Easter Elchies estate on 158 hectares (390 acres) of farmland on the banks of the River Spey in the heart of Speyside. The estate includes 37 hectares (90 acres) of barley grown for whiskey production. It is one of the first legally licensed distilleries in Scotland and has established a reputation as the world's top single malt whiskey since its inception. The birth of Macallan whiskey was largely due to the significant contribution of Spain, North America, Scotland and natural raw materials, as well as the combination of traditional manufacturing methods and craftsmanship.

The Macallan family style has traditionally leaned towards rich, fruity whiskies, which the late whiskey writer Michael Jackson described as "Christmas cake in a glass". In June 2018, Macallan opened a new distillery building with a visitor center.
