The Mazzei family established themselves in Tuscany as early as the 11th century. The word Chianti is documented in 1398, making them the earliest producers of Chianti wine! In 1435, Madonna Smeralda Mazzei married Piero di Agnolo da Fonterutoli, officially establishing Castello di Fonterutoli. This family-owned winery boasts a unique 600-year history, a truly unique achievement. With so many generations of experience, it's no wonder the winery produces numerous long-standing, highly-rated wines. The most famous of these, Siepi, was even named one of the 50 wines that revolutionized Italian winemaking by Gambero Rosso—a true masterpiece!

Philip Mazzei, featured on this wine label, was a prominent figure in both the wine industry and the world. Born in Tuscany in 1730, he met American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin and the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, while living in London in 1750. He established a close friendship with them and introduced Tuscan grapes and other specialties to Virginia. Even more remarkable was his advocacy of equality, which inspired Thomas Jefferson's quote in the United States Declaration of Independence: "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." To honor Philip, a commemorative stamp titled "Philip Mazzei Patriot Remembered" was issued in 1980, the 250th anniversary of the United States' birth.
