THE HISTORY
Montevetrano starts in the mid 80s, with a group of friends who love wine and has the desire to experiment. It was 1983, and among them there were Silvia Imparato and Riccardo Cotarella. After six years, there is the first bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon 90% and Aglianico 10%, the first vintage of a wine that will adopt the same name of the castle: Montevetrano. An extraordinary success, that still continues today.
Today Montevetrano is a 26 hectares estate about 5 of these are vineyards, in the Monti Picentini Regional Park, in southern Italy.The vineyards are in San Cipriano Picentino, in a former Bourbons’ estate at 100 meters above sea level, on the crest of a hill among oaks, chestnuts,hazelnut trees, citrus grove and olive trees, by the shadow of an ancient medieval castle. The boundaries are marked by blackberry bushes and old roses introduce to the rows in the “Horse vineyard”, near the ‘700 country house.
Montevetrano has a recognizable style, characterized by complexity, like the territory in which it is born with its variety of perfumes and colours. It is a wine with a strong persistence, that benefits from the influence of the sea and a mild climate. The vineyard is protected by the Picentini Mountains, which form like a crown around the property. Thanks to a careful and respectful processing it the Montevetrano continues to mature in bottles for fifteen or twenty years. According to the tasting made during the years, the forecasts and experts opinions on the various vintages, Montevetrano guaranties great longevity.

The 2010 Montevetrano is flat-out gorgeous. Vibrant, floral aromatics lead to layers of beautifully delineated fruit in this finely sculpted chiseled Montevetrano. A wine of extraordinary beauty, the 2010 impresses for its clarity and nuance. I don’t think I have ever tasted a young Montevetrano with this much pure silkiness and finesse. There is a level of precision and delineation in the 2010 that is truly marvelous. I can’t wait to see how it ages. The 2010 is also notable for a much higher percentage of Aglianico (30%) than has been common in the past, while the international varieties are less prominent in the blend. In 2010 Montevetrano is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot, which means the Cabernet Sauvignon now plays a much smaller role in the blend. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

This structured yet polished wine, made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot, opens with intense aromas of tilled earth, mature black fruit, leather, graphite and spice. The Juicy palate offers fleshy blackberry, black currant, black pepper and mineral alongside silky smooth tannins. Hold for more complexity.
