Piombaia is located in the heart of thehistorical production area of Brunello di Montalcino, with 12 hectares ofvineyard that extend around the winery ‘Piombaia’, to the southwest ofMontalcino, on the road for Sant’ Angelo in Colle, and around the “La Crocina”,located on the road from Montalcino to Sant’ Antimo. Both are owned by theRossi-Cantini family. This is one of the highest areas of Montalcino and thevineyards are located at an altitude that varies from 400 to 600 mt asl – thesecond highest in the DOCG. They favour the production of elegant, etherealwines with a long refinement in the bottle and have been in conversion tobiodynamics, with the aim of safeguarding the harmony between nature, earth andman and to promote soil fertility and vitality, of flora and fauna in thevineyards. The fermentation cellar is strategically located in the middle ofthe vines, so as to guarantee the least stress possible to the grape. Wines areaged in tonneaux (500-liter oak barrels) and large botti that are perfect forthe long aging of Brunello di Montalcino. Piombaia is managed by RobertoCantini and sons Vittorio, who takes care of the farm and is involved in theproduction of wines and Francesco who is an agronomist, and daughter Cecilia,who takes care of the marketing and communication.

 



The Rosato comes from a bleed off afermenting vat of Brunello, bottled under crown cap unfined and unfiltered – inessence Brunello rose The Rosso di Montalcino spends 8 months in old oaktonneaux. The Brunello do Montalcino spends 3 years in tonneaux and large caskbefore 2 years in bottle.

Here I find a pretty and quite zesty display of Sangiovese fruit, yet firmly rooted in the earth, as notes of dusty black cherry, rosy dried florals, sweet Tuscan spice, and undergrowth waft up from the glass. On the palate, silky, almost-creamy textures usher in pure ripe cherry and strawberry fruits, as brisk acids provide vibrancy, and subtle spice slowly settles over a bed of fine tannin. The finish is medium in length, resonating on minerals and tart berry-cranberry fruit with a final tug of acids and gentle tannin. It’s very pretty, easy to like, and will evolve nicely over the coming decade or more.
