Our History
Following 20 years in the high-tech industry segment, essentially for US vendors, Didier Marcelis took over the family property (9,5ha by then) in early 2003. Château Serilhan had been created in 1982 by Didier’s grandfather, then managed by his parents. As soon as he arrived, and with the full support of his brother Thierry, Didier invested rapidly in order to improve the quality of the domain. Since late 2007, Bernard Franc ex director Chateau Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet, is the technical director to Serilhan and in the same time Hubert de Boüard rejoins them as the consulting oenologist.
The vineyard
The appellation lies on the banks of the estuary, in the heart of the Médoc region, just 50km north of Bordeaux. Its proximity to both the sea and the estuary gives it a mild climate with regular temperatures, good sunshine and beneficial breezes, a combination of factors that ensures optimum ripeness levels in the grapes.The 1250 ha of vines are planted in an area composed of well-drained outcrops. Their natural drainage properties are enhanced by the composition of the predominantly gravelly terroir. Thousands of years ago, in the quaternary era, the gravelly soils and stones of the faraway mountains were torn away by torrential rivers and settled in successive layers on the tertiary substrata. The gravel is composed of small round pebbles and white oval- shaped quartz stones as well as clay, flint, volcanic Lydian and grit mixed with varying proportions of sand and clay differing from one area of the appellation to the next. This remarkable geological diversity partly explains the variety of the landscapes and soil colours.

The 2015 Château Sérilhan has a crisp blackberry, briary, damp earth-tinged bouquet that shows a little more cohesion than other Saint Estèphe 2015s. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, red berry entry, well-balanced if not showing the depth on the finish that is displayed elsewhere. Still, this is a well-crafted wine that should give 15-20 years of pleasure.

Lots of blackberry notes but also earth and menthol on the nose. Well structured but still has a lightness of touch thanks to the fresh acidity. Clean, medium to long finish. Drink or hold.

This is firm and silky with a solid core of blueberry and dark-chocolate character. Medium to full body and a linear finish. Driven and focused red.

The 2017 Serilhan has an attractive bouquet, predominantly red fruit - raspberry, cranberry and wild strawberry,flanked by cedar and sous-bois scents that become more "vocal" with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied withrounded, fleshy red berry fruit. Perhaps it tails off towards the finish, the limitation of the growing season denying thisSaint-Estephe the same complexity as say, the 2019. Still, it has an easygoing nonchalance about it that l admire.

There's always lovely texture and flesh in this wine, and it's a success in 2017, with an intense end of summer fruit feel and a cinnamon edge. It's clearly been carefully worked to soften those tannins, delivering structure without closing the fruit down. Around 3ha of the 12.54ha estate were affected by frost. Harvested 18 September to 5 October. 78% of production for the grand vin, 22% for the second wine. 37% new oak. Hubert de Boüard is consultant.
