Taylor's, located in Portugal's Douro Valley, boasts a history of over 300 years and is one of the oldest Port wine companies. Dedicated entirely to Port production, Taylor's is world-renowned for its legendary Vintage Ports.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker once described Taylor's as the Chateau Latour of Port! Taylor's is considered the benchmark for Vintage Port. Its signature Vintage Port has garnered numerous accolades and is renowned for its elegance, poise, restrained power, and longevity. Even Parker has particularly favored it. Taylor's is one of only three Portuguese wineries included in Parker's book, The Greatest Wines of the World. In his book, Parker writes, "Taylor's wines are the most expensive vintage ports, for obvious reasons: first, their remarkable longevity; second, their exceptional complexity and richness." Both the 1992 and 1948 vintage ports received a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker!

Taylor has been family-run for many years, owning its own vineyards and purchasing grapes from generations-old growers. The grapes for the company's finest ports are sourced from the steep, rocky slopes of the Douro Valley, where vine cultivation dates back to Roman times. In its fourth century, Taylor was considered one of the world's finest port companies, with its products sold in 54 countries worldwide.

The 2017 Vintage Port is a field blend aged for approximately 20 months in wood. It comes in with 100 grams of residual sugar. Rich, concentrated and often sensational, this is well structured, even better in its fruit profile. While the fruit is terrific, it is also wonderfully fresh. This is arguably a great Taylor's, but it still needs to prove its final case in the cellar. I don't think that will be a problem. As I said when I first saw it, it effortlessly combines brilliant fruit and structure. It does everything right, and it is a formidable competitor to its Vinha Velha sibling in this report. And at half the price.

The 2017 Taylor's Vintage Port comes from their three quintas: Vargellas,de Terra Feita and do junco, picking commencing at Vargellas onSeptember l, the earliest since 1945. Now this boasts a bold and moreflamboyant bouquet vis-à-vis the Croft with layers of blackcurrant,blueberries, violet and allspice. Wonderful definition here and as itratchets up through the gears with aeration manages to maintainimpressive delineation. The palate is medium, rather full.bodied. The firstimpression is one of freshness, completely disguising that summer's drynessand warmth, a disarming finesse built around the frame of tannins thatwould have been impossible years ago. lt is a silky-smooth Taylor's, one ofthe most polished 2017 Vintage Ports with energy and tension floodingthrough the finish. Aristocratic as ever, totally Taylor's, yet still translatingthe growing season with aplomb. Total production is 1l,500 cases.
