Sir Peter Mackie, the founder of White Horse, learned the craft at the Lagavulin distillery on Islay and is very good at mastering the flavor of peat. The base liquor used in the early days of White Horse whiskey mainly came from the Lagavulin distillery. It can be said that White Horse whiskey is one of the whiskeys with the richest peat smoke flavor among blended whiskeys.
The history of White Horse whiskey can be traced back to 1880, when James Logan Mackie established a company named after himself (James Logan Mackie & Co.) in Glasgow to specialize in selling whiskey. The company was once a shareholder in the Lagavulin Distillery.
In 1890, James' nephew Peter Mackie became a partner and changed the company's name to Mackie & Co. Peter saw the rising trend of high-quality blended whiskey in the international market and was keenly aware of the potential of blended whiskey, so he decided to shift his business focus to the production of blended whiskey. Since peat-flavored blended whiskeys are rare on the market, White Horse Whiskey quickly occupied the market with its unique flavor once it was launched. In 1926, White Horse whiskey used metal screw caps instead of traditional wooden stoppers for the first time. This epoch-making innovation not only made it easier to store and prevent whiskey from leaking, but also promoted the industrialization of the subsequent bottling process. After Peter's death, White Horse Whiskey was sold to DCL (Distillers Company Ltd.) in 1927. After several twists and turns, White Horse Whiskey finally became one of the many whiskey brands owned by Diageo.
White Horse Whiskey takes its name from the White Horse Cellar Inn, a hotel located near the Mackie family home. This hotel is an old hotel in Edinburgh, founded in 1742. The early label of White Horse whiskey was "White Horse Cellar". By the 1960s, "Cellar" disappeared and became the current "White Horse". The white horse pattern on the upper part of the White Horse whiskey label is drawn to imitate the hotel sign, while the carriage pattern on the lower part of the label represents the carriage that was the means of transportation from London to Edinburgh at that time.
Since Peter worked at the Lagavulin distillery on Islay in his youth, he has a special affinity for peat flavours. Most of the base liquor used in the early days of White Horse whiskey came from the Lagavulin distillery. After entering the 20th century, in order to develop the international market, White Horse whiskey began to dilute the peat flavor and add aromas such as malt and citrus.
In order to secure the original spirit used to blend whiskey, Peter purchased the Craigellachie Distillery in Speyside in 1915 and expanded it. Today's White Horse whiskey has a unique aroma of malt and citrus fruits, intertwined with peat and smoky aromas.
Speaking of loyal fans of White Horse Whiskey, we have to mention the famous Japanese director Akira Kurosawa (くろさわ あきら). It is said that Akira Kurosawa often bought White Horse whiskey by the dozen (12 bottles), and once broke the record by drinking three bottles of White Horse whiskey with his good friend, Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (みふねとしろう).
