Yalumba Winery was planted with the first vine by Samuel Smith in 1849. Today, the family has been brewing for six generations. Samuel Smith was originally a British beer brewer, and after immigrating to Australia, he and his son purchased a piece of land to start growing grapes and named it Yalumba, which means “all the land around”.
After more than 170 years of hard work, Yalumba Winery today has considerable scale and reputation. Robert Hill Smith, the fifth generation heir to the Smith family, the current owner, said of his winery that their constant pursuit is not only a responsibility for history, but also an enthusiastic pursuit of the future. This also fully illustrates the mission of Yalumba Winery to pass on its history and carry forward the future. Robert Hill Smith worked in Yalumba’s cellars and vineyards from 1970 before becoming involved in the sales and marketing departments of the winery and being responsible for exporting and developing an internationalization strategy for the company. In 1983, he was appointed head of marketing and he soon began to struggle for new quality wines for the family business. A few years later, Robert Hill Smith, together with his brother Sam, secured the Smith family’s controlling stake in the winery and adjusted the direction in favor of the winery’s future development, and is now a top winery that has set several world records.
Menzies Estate Vineyard is located in the center of Coonawarra, with the famous Terra Rossa red soil and limestone The sea breeze extends the maturity period and will also bring out a unique eucalyptus aroma, with some will have a sense of sea breeze
The name The Cigar comes from the fact that the range of red earth looks like a cigar on the map. The wine in addition to the characteristics of red soil also really has a cigar aroma - it is worth mentioning that Yalumba is the only winery in the southern hemisphere, the only four wineries in the world with homemade barrel factories. The wine is aged for 21 months in 20% new French hogsheads & barriques + 1 year old French hogsheads & barriques + older French barrels.

Really impressive depth and poise , this offers aromas of blueberries, cassis, chocolate and dark plums, ahead of a deeply rich palate that is bathed in ripe, fleshy cabernet fruit. The tannins serve the wine well. Drink or hold.
Decanter 93 pts
Lower than average winter rainfall and a warmer spring and summer have produced an exuberant Cabernet, with a sweet ripe blueberry and cassis aroma. Sourced from Yalumba's Menzies vineyard in Coonawarra, it retains juicy persistent and savoury tobacco lift and tapenade undertones. Aged in French barriques and hogsheads (20% new), with graphite tannins and pencil shaving notes, it tick all the Cabernet boxes. An out-and-out charmer with a spring in its step.
Vinous 92 pts
Shimmering ruby. Displays lush aromas of ripe cherry and cassis, plus hints of cured tobacco, cedary oak and candied flowers. Broad and Pliant on the palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit, baking spice and cola flavors that shows supple texture and a late touch of spiciness. Smooth tannins build slowly on the persistent finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins.
