Fifth generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo has returned to the roots of what made Yamazaki Single Malt quintessentially Yamazaki: deep, complex and multi-layered with fruit and Mizunara notes.
Good whisky requires good water and proper maturation in the right environment. Torii strived for a uniquely Japanese whisky to surpass Scotch whisky, and searched for a genuinely Japanese climate for years. Yamazaki lies in a misty valley between Mt.Tennozan and Mt. Otokoyama where three rivers meet. It has one of Japan’s softest waters and is ideal for whisky maturation. This choice of location has been proven by the quality of whisky produced in the Yamazaki distillers for many years.
Yamazaki Distillery is distinguished by its uniqueness that a single distillery can produce a variety of whiskies, which a very few distilleries in the world can match. It all started with Suntory’s pursuit of crafting world-class whisky to please the delicate Japanese palate. The Yamazaki Whisky is Suntory's flagship single malt whisky, from Japan’s first and oldest malt distillery. With a range of options from Yamazaki Distillery’s Reserve to 12, 18, and 25 years old, all of these prized whiskies contain carefully blended components aged in American, Spanish, and Japanese Mizunara oak.
An intriguing Japanese release from the Yamazaki distillery stringing from the recent movement toward non-age statement whiskies from producers, this one with a noticeable difference. Suntory's Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve is a mix of malts varying in age and cask type, originating from ex-red wine casks matured for approximately three years, older Sherry matured malts approximately twenty years in age and Mizunara casks, otherwise known as Japanese oak, for a twelve year period.
Amber gold appearance. Understated and pure with aromas of vanilla, cocoa dusted malt and honeyed cereals; hints of fruit cake here too. More stewed pear with air contact. Medium dry, fresh delivery offers a spicy, orchard fruit, vanilla and juicy malt burst. Succulent and fruity to finish. Almost a floral delicacy to the aftertaste. Love the mouthfeel here. A gorgeous harmony of flavour and texture.
