Winery - (ZGM) Zimmermann-Graeff & Müller
ZGM is one of the most famous export companies in the German wine industry. Founded in 1886 by Jacob Zimmermann, the great-great-grandfather of the current owners (Dr. Tina Schiemann and Dominik Hübinger), ZGM has been in the hands of five generations of owners with the same mission. The new winery was moved to its current location in 2011 for its 125th anniversary. With a production area of 5,000 square meters and a capacity of more than 500,000 bottles/120,000 liters of wine per day, ZGM has been able to sell more than 56 million liters of wine per year thanks to its philosophy of quality and now sells its wines in 37 countries.
German Wine Classification System
The classification system of German wines has detailed rules on both the origin and sugar content of the wines, and the winemakers also use the relevant German symbols to identify their wines on the labels. In general, German wines are categorized from low to high: D.Wein, Landwein, Qualitatswein and Pradikatswein.
Pradikatswein: This class of wine is a further subdivision of wine according to the degree of ripeness of the grapes.
Wines in this class are further subdivided according to the degree of ripeness of the grapes. The higher the sugar content of the grapes, the sweeter the wine will be and the higher the alcohol concentration.
Eiswein, which we often hear about, is also produced in Germany and is categorized in this class
1. Reserve wines (Kabinett): the lightest of all, available in dry and semi-dry versions.
2. Late Harvest (Spatlese): Although late harvest wines also have the word “Trocken” (dry) on the bottle, they are generally sweeter than Kabinett, fuller bodied, and have citrus, pineapple, and other fruit flavors.
3. Auslese: Hand-harvested and to some extent infested with noble rot, Auslese wines are also available in dry form, but are generally sweeter and more full-bodied than late-harvested wines.
4. Beerenauslese or BA: Rieslings made from grapes selected from the cluster do not yield much because they must be infested with noble rot.
5. Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA): this is the lowest yielding wine, and usually has about 30% more sugar than TBA.
6. Ice wine (Eiswein): After the grapes have frozen on the vines on winter nights, they are hand-picked and pressed in time for the production of ice wine.
Pfalz
Pfalz has been planting grapes since ancient Rome, and in continental Europe, before the grapes were attacked by Phylloxera, Pfalz's white wines were among the most expensive in the world. The Michel Schneider winery, established in 1869 and with a history of nearly 150 years, has always been very strict with its grapes and winemaking. Compared with other wine-producing countries, such as France, Italy and Spain, Germany is located in the relatively cold north of Europe, and in order to obtain the sunshine hours and temperatures necessary for grape ripening, most of the vineyards in the territory are located in the southwest of Germany, and Pfalz is the second largest wine-producing region in Germany, and occasionally the first one, which is situated in the southwestern part of Germany, and the north of it is close to Rheinhessen (Rhein Black Forest), which is also the most important wine-producing area. Located in southwestern Germany, close to the Rheinhessen (Black Forest of the Rhine) region in the north and the Alsace (France) region in the south, and protected by mountain ranges, the Pfalz climate is very close to the Mediterranean climate, which is very warm and sunny, with few late frosts or winter frosts, and therefore the wines produced tend to have sufficient ripeness.
