Second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st Grand Cru Classé
Features close to the Grand Vin with a clean personality linked to a higher proportion of Merlot
A vineyard of international renown
An alternative to Lafite’s first Grand Cru classé: this wine becomes a real institution in China
Very good scores for the last vintages
Once upon a time, in the history of the great wines of Bordeaux … The Chateau Margaux, known since the twelfth century. It is under the yoke of Eleanor of Aquitaine and especially by the adoption of his son Richard Coeur de Lion of the Bordeaux wine at his daily table that will be born the vines of the Chateau. As early as 1572, the Lestonnac family began the work that will give Chateau Margaux its current configuration. At the end of the XVIIth century, Chateau Margaux occupied 265 hectares, surface of which it will not deviate any more, a third of the field is devoted to the vine. Chateau Margaux becomes a reference of the art of making wine and the hierarchy between the different Bordeaux wines is already drawing. Apart from a few minor changes, Chateau Margaux’s label has remained remarkably stable since the end of the 19th century. In 1950, the Ginestet family became owner of the estate, before giving way to the Mentzelopoulos family, by the father and his daughter Corinne, now sole owner of the Chateau. Perhaps its sobriety and elegance correspond so well to the personality of the wine that it has never seemed appropriate to change anything. Pavillon Rouge is the white second wine of the Chateau.
The Carruades enjoy a unique terroir and characteristics close to the great wine, given the refined selection of the latter for twenty years. This wine also has its own personality, linked to a higher proportion of Merlot in its composition and plots now well identified as producing Carruades. The varietals associated in the wine are 50 to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 to 50% Merlot and a variation that can range from 0 to 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In 2010, Lafite refined its system by building two vats consisting of several dozen small capacity vats. A merlot vat (50 to 125 hl cement vats) and a division vat (30 to 70 hl stainless steel vats) dedicated to malolactic fermentation.
At the tasting, this second wine offers a very supple and round attack. Carruades de Lafite then presents young and lively tannins but of a beautiful quality that the time will reveal then wonderfully. A harmonious and complex nectar.
