In the early 1990s, Chile was just emerging into the international world of wine. However, Eduardo Chadwick, who had joined his father in the family wine business, Viña Errázuriz, in 1983, already knew from his extensive travels to the wine regions of the world that Chile’s land and climate were particularly suited for producing fine wines and had great potential. And when family friend and vintner Agustín Huneeus asked him to spend some time showing Robert Mondavi and his wife Margrit around the Chilean wine country, he was delighted to have the opportunity.
Robert Mondavi found a kindred spirit in young Eduardo Chadwick, who spent a week showing him around central Chile in 1991. They visited many wineries in the Aconcagua, Maipo, and Colchagua valleys.
By the time they were done, they were both convinced that Chile had all the potential that California had shown two decades earlier and that together they could make an outstanding wine—a true Icon—that could prove Chile’s world-class potential.
Seña needed a vineyard of its own, and Tim Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick began searching for just the right terroir. Tim was ahead of his time in insisting they seek out a cooler site in order to make a fresher, more elegant wine than was the norm in the mid-1990s. And because they agreed that the use of sustainable practices was a key element from the beginning, they also looked for a site that was relatively self-contained for better environmental protection and to prevent cross-contamination from neighbours involved in conventional agricultural practices.
Today, although the road has begun, there is still much to do and go. Eduardo Chadwick’s daughters, María Eugenia, María Magdalena, María José and Alejandra, not only give joy and meaning to the life of Seña’s founder because of their family ties, but also because they are venturing into the wonderful world of viticulture.
Seña’s 42-hectare hillside vineyard was planted in 1998 to key red Bordeaux varieties and Carmenere. The volcanic and colluvial soils on the valley’s slopes present a variety of textures and proportions of stone content, resulting in a great diversity of well-drained gravel and rocky soils with loam to clay-loam texture.
The Mediterranean climate in this valley ensures warm, dry summers, bright sunny days and cold, rainy winters that the vines love. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the median temperatures are low, however, the vineyard’s position on the eastern side of the Coastal Mountains, facing away from the sea, protects the vines from the direct effect of the ocean’s strong, cold winds and creates cool-climate conditions, perfect for producing red grapes that reach an excellent level of maturity with balanced acidity that provide great elegance and finesse.
The vineyard lies over three main types of substrata: volcanic rocks (andesite and volcanic breccias) in the upper terraces, colluvium brought by gravity from above along the slopes (medium section soils), and alluvium in the form of both coarse material transported a few hundred metres along the ravine and rounded and fine-grained material transported by the Rabuco River at the bottom of the valley over a greater distance from the Las Palmas de Ocoa sector a few kilometres away.
The selection of Bordeaux varietals, rootstock and clones, and the design of row spacing, direction and trellises came after much deliberation. SEÑA 42-hectare hillside vineyard was planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere, along with Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
