雖然與 Chianti 和 Montalcino 同屬 Tuscany，以葡萄Sangiovese 為主，但在香港選購  Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 產區並不以同區的 Chianti 與 Montalcino 般容易，選擇並不多，其實 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 在意大利本土相當具名氣，釀酒歷史遠早於二千五百年前的文案上，他跟Piedmont 的 Barolo 與 Barbaresco 和 Tuscany 的 Montalcino 成為首4個意大利 DOCG法定產區，在早於1685年 Francesco Redi 的 Bacco in Toscana 詩文中就有提過Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ，當時被譽為  the King of all wines，而美國前總統 Thomas Jefferson 對這區的紅酒讚嘆不已 : 「For the present I confine myself to the physical want of some good Montepulciano…this being a very favorite wine and habit having rendered the light and high flavored wines of a necessary of life with me. It was most superlatively good.」
 
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 產區位於 Tuscany 的東南部，Siena 東南約25哩，葡萄園環繞著 Montepulciano巿，散落於高低起伏的山丘之上，由海拔250到600米，坐向都以東＆東南為主，佈滿岩石的Clay黏土比較多的區域生產較厚身的酒款，而沙質區域生產比較芳香的酒款～
 
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG法規規定葡萄比例Sangiovese (本土又稱為 Prugnolo gentile ) 最少 70%，可混調 Canaiolo Nero 或部份local grape 如 Colorino,Canaiolo 或 Mammolo ，法規規定要陳熟兩年，Riserva 則要陳熟3年，兩者相樣規定其中一年必須於橡木桶陳熟，區內普遍用大桶 Botti，避免了法國細桶 Barriques 為葡萄酒帶來過多的烤焙和雲尼拿等味道，Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 是一個相對傳統的產區。
 
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano的酒富結構，單寜充足、良好酸度、擁有極佳的陳存力，一般會在二十年間不斷進化，更有人認為 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 楺合了 Chainti 充滿香氣，同時也有 Montalcino 飽滿的酒體，而且最重要—售價比鄰區 Burnello di Montalcino 或同級的Chianti 實惠，年輕的 Nobile 香氣四溢，擁有中等酒體，帶清新的果香，混集了黑苺、布冧、香料、泥土樹葉的氣息，成熟了的 Nobile 更會發展更多的層次，擁有煙草、皮革，乾果等味道，而且單寜柔軟了，酒體變得複雜多變。

對比 Montalcino 的氣候，Montepulciano 沒有受到海洋氣候影響，較寒冷的冬天和較短的生長期，相對來說產量較低，對比 Montalcino 更顯優雅，沒有 Brunello 酒體那麼宏大，維持了良好的酸度和新鮮度，尤其以現今全球暧化嚴重，部份 Montalcino 甚具名氣的酒莊也開始著手在栽種和釀酒上作出應對，避免因天氣太熱釀出酒精過高或太甜的酒，失去了平衡，而較涼快Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 乘勢掘起。
