Winery

Nestled in the heart of Urville, Drappier Champagne has been producing exquisite champagne since 1808. With a rich history spanning eight generations, the family-run estate has mastered the art of blending tradition and innovation to create champagnes that embody authentic elegance and a deep respect for the terroir. Its champagne has been enjoyed not only by royalty but also by former French President Charles de Gaulle for a personal reception in 1965. It was also the premier champagne served to French heads of state during the 2003 G8 summit, demonstrating the unique appeal of Drappier Champagne.

Region

Drappier Champagne is located in Urville, Aube, in the southernmost sub-region of the Champagne region. The vineyard currently covers over 70 hectares, with an additional 50 hectares of leased vineyards. 70% of the vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier, 5% Chardonnay, and 5% old-growth varieties such as Arbane and Petit Meslier. Inheriting the unique style of the Côte des Bar hillsides, Pinot Noir is "in the family's blood." The soil here contains a significant amount of Kimmeridgian limestone from the Late Jurassic period, rich in marine microbial fossils. The resulting champagne exhibits a firm, rich flavor, layered aromas, and a distinct minerality, all hallmarks of Drappier Champagne.

Drappier Champagne's own vineyards are all certified organic and ECOCERT-certified. They are managed according to organic and natural methods, without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Hand weeding is carried out with hoes, plowing is done with horse-drawn plows, and the land is left fallow. Ground cover is controlled to promote biodiversity and maintain a natural balance in the vineyards. The winery's commitment to climate change has earned it the title of ECOACT-certified carbon-neutral Champagne House. To reduce greenhouse gases, the house utilizes naturally cooled cellars, introduces electric vehicles and tractors, and eliminates fossil fuels. The house adheres to measures such as self-generated electricity (75% photovoltaic power) and low-carbon bottles (80% recycled glass). Even Antoine's beloved horse, Ida, cultivates the land organically to reduce its carbon footprint and prevent soil erosion. This truly is a traditional winery steeped in compassion and care.

Winemaking

The house uses only first-pressed grape juice, respecting the grape's natural origin, the unique character of each grape, the essence of each terroir, and even the characteristics of each individual plot. The house is committed to unleashing the potential of each wine, making each vintage unique. The winery minimizes manual intervention during the winemaking process, with no filtration prior to bottling and minimal addition of sulfur dioxide, keeping the sulfur content in Champagne between 30 and 45 mg per liter, less than a quarter of the legal limit. As a result, Drappier Champagne has a more natural color and a richer and purer aroma.

Rating

Entirely crafted from Pinot Noir and disgorged with a dosage of four grams per liter, the NV Brut Rosé de Saignée offers up aromas of strawberries, mint, spices and crushed stones. Moderately weighted and tense, it's nicely phenolic, with an incisive, lively mid-palate that concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish and delicate strawberry notes. Five percent of the wines are matured in foudres.
