Chateau Pouget 2015 Margaux《ZTF308》
A major reason for Pouget's rarity is that the winery initially sold its wines to a single negociant, Cordier, under a pre-sale agreement. Unlike other classified growths that are distributed across the market, Pouget is not subject to general distribution. Furthermore, the winery boasts only 10 hectares of vineyards, which is quite small for a Bordeaux classified growth. This low yield makes it relatively rare in the market, and therefore less well-known. The vineyards are approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 35 years. Depending on the vintage, the wines are aged in new barrels, ranging from 30% to 50% (up to 80%), for 12-18 months. This relatively low barrel content gives the wines a more fruity and floral aroma, more Margaux-like.
It is also believed that this gentleness, elegance, and "Margaux" quality contribute to the winery's generally mediocre scores (for example, Robert Parker, one of the most influential figures, has always favored full-bodied wines), leading to less recognition. However, the family-owned Margaux Third Growth Boyd-Cantenac was once highly recommended by "Water Drops of God," describing it as having a masquerade feel. So, Pouget is certainly a strong contender!
The vineyard covers 10 hectares, with soil primarily composed of siliceous gravel. The vines are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of approximately 35 years. Throughout the vineyard's growth period, the winery meticulously manages the vineyard, employing timely pruning and leaf trimming, and effectively managing the vineyard staff to ensure that every bunch of grapes receives meticulous care and thrives. Furthermore, the winery prioritizes the ecological balance of the vineyard, avoiding excessive use of chemical sprays and fertilizers. This rigorous and meticulous management ensures that the Pouget vineyard produces grapes of exceptional quality, rich in flavor, and ripe in flavor.
After harvest, Château Pouget selects the grapes, then transfers those meeting the standards to cement and stainless steel tanks for fermentation and maceration. During this period, the winery closely monitors the wine's development and frequently drenches the grape skins to extract the necessary pigments, tannins, and flavors. However, for its simpler, fruitier second wines, the winery selects grapes from younger vines and gently extracts them. The maceration period varies depending on the vintage, typically ranging from 8 to 35 days. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels for 12 to 24 months. During this period, the lees are frequently stirred to impart further complexity. Furthermore, throughout the winemaking process, grapes from different vineyard plots are fermented and aged separately, and the blend is determined based on the performance of each plot to create a wine that accurately reflects the winery's terroir.
This is very chewy and rich with lots of ripe tannins and intense flavors. Medium long finish. Should develop beautifully.
