Winery

In 2010, after having dedicated the previous 20 years to the recovery and maintenance of his wineyards, and after a whole life spent in the fascinating world of wine making, Pedro Merayo establishes Bodegas y Viñedos Merayos. The winery’s founder’s experience and knowledge in the wine sector and his love for the Bierzo region have culminated in this project.

Region

The Merayo family has always been strongly linked to the world of wine and they have owned one of the most important wineries in the region for decades. However, in the late 1980′s , Pedro Merayo decided to take time off from wine making to concentrate his efforts on the care and maintenance of the family vineyards.

Winemaking

After the great changes of the late 1990′s with the creation of new wineries and the modernization of existing ones as well as the development of wine making and its enthusiastic acceptance in national and international markets, the family decided to return to its roots. They resumed wine making in the winery located on the family estate, Finca Miralmonte. The basis of the move was the strong commitment to the production of quality autochthonous varieties.

Our Best in Show journey across Northern Spain continues with a 2020 Bierzo, grown just across the provincial border from Galicia into Castilla y Léon. It’s another zone of steep slopes and old vines – the variety in this case being Mencia (known as Jaen in Portugal’s Dão region). This wine is deep black-red in colour and vivacious and urgent in aroma: wild plums mingled with the woodland scents of leaf, copse and forest floor. The palate is fruit-packed and vibrant, vigorous with an energy derived both from ripe acidity and fresh though smooth tannins; look out, too, for a stony, bitter-edged finish perhaps derived from the region’s slate soils. Wonderful drinking now in the flush of youth, but fruit of this quality will hold well for a few years yet.

This shows notes of blackberries and blueberries with hints of walnuts, dried herbs, baking spices and cocoa nibs. Medium-to full-bodied with chalky, dusty tannins and a smooth, seamless texture. Juicy and crunchy blue-fruit character and notes of chocolate and licorice to close.
