Pazo Cilleiro | Muriel Wines

The Salnés valley, a subarea of the DO Rías Baixas with a strong ocean influence, is the birthplace of Albariño. Pazo Cilleiro is located in Meis, a village in the heart of this maze of gentle valleys which run into the estuary. Near the winery, the beautiful Armenteira monastery, built in Galician Romanesque style, bears witness to the long wine growing tradition of these lands.

Pazo Cilleiro obtains its precious Albariño grapes from a constellation of small plots spread across the length and breath of the Salnés region. Altogether, there are 80 hectares under vine cared for by 250 independent winegrowers with whom we have a close partnership.

Most of the vines are grown on trellis or pergola, the traditional training system in the region. Our experience tells us that it is suitable for the development and health of the grape and to bring the most out of the variety.

Practical and functional, Pazo Cilleiro’s winery has all the necessary technology and facilities to make quality wines. After a first selection in the vineyard, grapes are harvested at their peak moment of ripeness and alcohol. Once in the winery, grapes go through a second selection process and are gently pressed. The must is kept chilled and is racked and fermented under controlled temperature conditions. The wine is then stabilized at a low temperature and aged with its fine lees to enhance the aromas of the Albariño variety. The wine is laid to rest in the bottle before it goes on sale.

On the shores of southern Galicia, the Atlantic ocean meanders inland and the green hills extend their arms towards the sea. It’s Rías Baixas, a coastal area in the province of Pontevedra surrounded by gentle rolling hills and dotted with ports, villages and small towns where life quietly goes by. In between them lies a great treasure —the traditional vineyards in the Denomination of Origin Rías Baixas.

The most accurate definition of Atlantic climate is found in Rías Baixas. Well distributed rain, mild temperatures all year round and minimal temperature oscillations. Plus relatively dry, luminous summers. These features create a highly suitable setting to grow Albariño, the main local grape variety.

Vines in DO Rías Baixas are planted in shallow soils close to the sea. The siliceous geology found across the western part of the Iberian Peninsula is present here on a shallow layer of granite sands providing the wines with a singular minerality. These are acid soils, a feature that is translated into salinity.

The Albariño variety, the great ambassador of Rías Baixas, is an early ripening white grape with small bunches and perfectly adapted to the region. With a marked personality, aromatic depth and flavour, balance and structure, Albariño vines are horizontally trained, a traditional method which is unique in the world and a symbol of Galician wine growing.

🏅 James Suckling 91pts:

I like the stony and zesty character here alongside the ripe citrus peel flavors. There is a touch of honey that brings out hints of tropical fruit. A twist of oatmeal, too. The uncompromising acidity gives a lot of crunchiness and brightness to the sleek, medium-bodied palate.
