Piper Heidsieck Champagne

In Australia's Yarra Valley, a region renowned as one of the world's best wine-producing areas for cool-climate climates, lies a winery named after jazz—Giant Steps. It's not only a legend in the Australian wine world, but also a focus of industry attention, having won both the "Winery of the Year" and "Best Pinot Noir" awards at the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion.

「我品嚐這些葡萄酒已經很長時間了,因為我從一開始就愛上了它們。」 —— Mel Chester,Giant Steps總經理暨首席釀酒師

"I've been tasting these wines for a long time because I fell in love with them from the very beginning." —Mel Chester, General Manager and Chief Winemaker of Giant Steps

Giant Steps' story began in 1997 when founder Phil Sexton, a brewing pioneer from Margaret River, was drawn to the Yarra Valley by his passion for wine, seeking the ideal place to cultivate pure and elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phil is not only a winemaker but also a passionate jazz enthusiast. He named the winery after John Coltrane's classic album *Giant Steps*, hoping it would emulate the album's revolutionary "giant steps" in the world of wine.

In 2003, winemaker Steve Flamsteed joined Phil, initiating a single-vineyard winemaking program focused on expressing the terroir of different plots in the Yarra Valley. In 2021, the talented Mel Chester took over as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture, leading the winery to new heights.

The Yarra Valley boasts Victoria's oldest viticultural history, with a cool climate and diverse geology. Giant Steps currently owns and manages several top-tier single vineyards within the Yarra Valley, each piece of land imbuing its wines with a unique character.

Giant Steps' winemaking philosophy can be summarized in two words: Purity and Finesse. The winery is committed to sustainable development and organic farming, respecting the natural growth of the grapes.

During the winemaking process, the winery employs a low-intervention approach:

· 100% hand-harvested: Ensuring the quality of every grape.

· Indigenous yeast fermentation: Utilizing a natural microbial ecosystem to promote fermentation by local yeasts, adding complexity.

· Gravity Flow: In a modern gravity-flow winery, physical principles are used to gently process the wine, avoiding rough pumping.

· Minimal clarification and filtration: Preserving the wine's most original flavors and textures.

Giant Steps wines are divided into several series, from entry-level appellation wines to rare single-vineyard wines, all showcasing the cool-climate characteristics of the Yarra Valley.

Must-try for beginners: Appellation Classics

· Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir

This wine is the perfect starting point for exploring the winery's style, offering rich layers with aromas of Earl Grey tea, cherry, red berries, and spices. The 2023 vintage was ranked 18th in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines, demonstrating its consistent quality.

· Giant Steps "Circle of Fifths" Chardonnay

This wine is a new masterpiece from the winery, skillfully blending the strengths of its five single vineyards, likened to a harmonious symphony. The 2024 vintage is its first, aged in stainless steel and French oak barrels, exhibiting aromas of minerals, white flowers, and a hint of ginger, with a balanced palate and bright acidity.

Flagship: Single Vineyard Series

· Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir / Chardonnay

As the winery's starting point, the Sexton vineyard is situated on the steep northern slopes of the Warramate Mountains, with poor soils. The Pinot Noir here possesses distinctive grainy and gravelly tannins with a strong structure; while the Chardonnay is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of beeswax and stone fruit.

· Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir

This is the winner of the 2025 Halliday "Best Pinot Noir," hailed by Mel Chester as "one of Australia's top Pinot Noir producing regions." This wine perfectly showcases the cool-climate characteristics of the Upper Yarra Valley, exhibiting delicacy, elegance, and a profound structure.

From planting its first vine in 1997 to standing at the pinnacle of Australian wine honors today, Giant Steps has spent nearly 30 years proving the immense potential of the Yarra Valley as a cool-climate wine region.

The winery's name not only pays homage to the improvisation and freedom of jazz but also symbolizes its relentless pursuit of terroir. If you also want to experience the ultimate charm of Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, why not start with a bottle of Giant Steps and listen to the terroir symphony of the Yarra Valley?
