In Burgundy, the surname "Roumier" signifies exceptional wines, a name that equates to rare and highly sought-after vintages, making it one of the few prestigious wineries on par with DRC and Leroy. Domaine Laurent Roumier, introduced today, was founded by the third generation of this legendary family.
The three rare and valuable Chambolle-Musigny wineries—Comte Georges de Vogue, Georges Roumier, and Jacques-Frederic Mugnier—are closely associated with Laurent Roumier and two of them.
Georges Roumier had seven children. The eldest, Alain, did not inherit the family business but instead served as the head winemaker and manager of Comte Georges de Vogue for 30 years. Domaine Roumier was later inherited by his younger son, Jean-Marc, and then by his son, Christoph. Laurent is Christoph's cousin.
Alain has two sons. Hervé Roumier, the elder, established his own winery in 1978 and succeeded Alain as winemaker and manager of de Vogue after Alain's retirement. Laurent Roumier, the younger son, worked and learned alongside his brother for eight years before establishing his own winery in 1994. In addition to the land he originally inherited, he also received a 1-hectare Grand Cru vineyard from Georges Roumier, and subsequently acquired more vineyards, expanding the winery to its current size.
It's worth noting that Laurent Roumier's winery is located next to Domaine Georges Roumier's. These cousins live side-by-side, each carrying on their family's winemaking tradition.
Domaine Laurent Roumier is located in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits region. This village is renowned for its delicate and elegant Pinot Noir, representing the most refined and graceful style in all of Burgundy. The most famous Premier Cru vineyard, Les Amoureuses, is located here, further enhancing the village's gentle, romantic, and enchanting character.
The winery's most prestigious vineyards are undoubtedly its two Grand Cru vineyards:
Les Bonnes-Mares: The winery owns only 0.14 hectares of land, located between Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue and Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier. Production is extremely limited. The vines were planted in 1938 on land originally belonging to Domaine Georges Roumier. Annual production is only 3-4 barrels, making it a highly sought-after and rare find.
Clos de Vougeot: The plot is located in the "Grand Maupertuis" area within the Clos de Vougeot vineyard, situated at a higher elevation, adjacent to the Grands Echezeaux and not far from the Musigny Grand Cru. It was transferred to Laurent Roumier in 1997.
In vineyard management, the winery adheres to the family's rational farming methods, avoiding the use of herbicides and chemical fertilizers. After hand-harvesting, all wines are 100% destemmed. After pressing, the wines are first subjected to cold maceration in open cement tanks, then transferred to closed cement tanks for stable and slow fermentation, during which daily treading and extraction are performed. Finally, the wines are aged in small oak barrels for 15-18 months. The proportion of new oak barrels is approximately 50% for Grand Cru and Premier Cru, approximately 30% for village-level wines, and 10% for regional wines. The wines are unfiltered and unclarified before bottling.
Compared to Georges Roumier, Laurent Roumier's winemaking philosophy leans more towards Henri Jayer's complete destemming and cold maceration; however, the thorough extraction process results in a remarkably robust and deep structure, possessing the same classic aging potential as Georges Roumier. After a period of cellar aging, the Roumier family style and the terroir of each plot become more apparent.
Fermentation takes place in cement tanks, with daily piggeage and remontage extractions during alcoholic fermentation. This traditional extraction method gently extracts pigments, tannins, and flavor compounds from the grape skins, creating a robust and deep wine structure.
Laurent uses the same oak barrels and oak sources as his cousin Christophe. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to small oak barrels for 15-18 months of aging. The proportion of new oak barrels is adjusted according to different classifications and vintage conditions: approximately 50% for Grand Cru and Premier Cru, approximately 30% for Village, and 10% for Expediency. Unclarified and unfiltered before bottling.
Domaine Laurent Roumier represents the continuation of a prestigious Burgundy family lineage, but has successfully carved its own path within the family's shadow. His Chambolle-Musigny wines are renowned for their precise structure, elegant fruit flavors, and captivating complexity, representing the essence of the village. For those seeking an entry-level experience of the typical "silky" character of Chambolle-Musigny, the Roumier family's elegant and pure style, with a more "approachable" feel compared to other renowned estates within the family, is a good option.
